Multimedia

Multimedia is "the combined use of several media, such as films, still images, text, speech, and sound in general, for instructional purposes." When children "do" they learn more than if they just "hear" or "see." The use of multimedia authoring tools help children to hear, see, and do.

We will have an opportunity to play with HyperStudio during this course. You will also be using the digital cameras for your personal portfolio assignment. Sound can be added to your project. Experiment with PowerPoint, on you own, adding sound to a slide show that you have created. Does it add to or take away from your slide show? You must make this decision every time you create multimedia to use in your teaching. Your students must make the same decision when they are creating multimedia projects in the course of their learning.

Ultimate example of multimedia production.

The Draft of Basic Technology Competencies for All Educators includes the following items that could be related to this discussion:

Send e-mail to me this session discussing these competencies and how they relate to multimedia. You do not need to retype each competency but can refer to them by number.

Tech4Learning:

Subject: News4Educators Flash - Announcing the Recipes4Success
Date: Sun, 06 Feb 2000 18:56:31 -800
I am thrilled to announce the release of the Recipes4Success training resource
series from Tech4Learning. The Recipes4Success series reflects our belief that
software skills are learned best in the context of a classroom project. Each Recipe
teaches software skills in the context of a classroom project. In creating a Recipe
project, such as a school newsletter, you learn both the skills necessary to utilize a
software program and a project idea you can begin using immediately in
your classroom.

Each Recipe includes:
á A step-by-step, illustrated project tutorial
á Additional project ideas to help you apply the skills learned to other projects
á Correlations to national technology and teacher education standards
á Presentation tips for trainers using the Recipe for workshops

Each Recipe is also three training solutions in one package!

Since no single media is best for everyone, we have designed print, software and
online versions of the Recipes. You get all three versions in each package. The
print version is perfect for after-school workshops and includes presentation
instructions, a trainer workbook, and a participant workbook. The software
version provides an interactive software tutorial you can annotate while you use
it along side the application you are learning. The online version of the Recipe
lets you study anywhere you have access to the Internet.

The license is designed for either school sites or individual trainers. Schools
can duplicate an unlimited number of copies of the print and software Recipe for
use at an individual school site, as well as provide the online registration key for
faculty and students to access from home (Districts are licensed based on the
number of school buildings). Trainers may duplicate the print materials for on-site trainings, as well as install the software in labs while they will be conducting
workshops.

There are currently nine Recipes available with more to come.
The current titles are:

Email Collaboration: Netscape Communicator 4.7
Developing a Classroom Gradebook: Microsoft Excel 98/2000
Building a Classroom Planner: FileMaker Pro 5.0
Building a Classroom Web Site: Microsoft FrontPage 2000 (Windows Only)
Creating Multimedia Stories: HyperStudio 3.3
Animated Story Starters: HyperStudio 3.3
Analyzing a Narrative: Inspiration 6.0
Creating Screens for Multimedia: Adobe Photoshop 5.5
Creating a School Newsletter: Microsoft Word 98/2000

Each Recipe is $69.95.
