PowerPoint 97 (PowerPoint 98 is on the PowerMac)

Information obtained from Teach Yourself Microsoft PowerPoint 97 in 24 Hours by Alexandria and Christopher Haddad

PowerPoint is the presentation software included in the Microsoft Office package. It can be used for all types of multimedia format including text, images, sound, and movies/presentations. It can also be used for student or teacher electronic portfolios.
PowerPoint can be found in the Programs menu (or MAC Launcher) or clicking on the button that looks like a monitor (with a pie graph) on the Office Shortcut toolbar can start the program.
When PowerPoint first opens, you get a window that allows you to choose between AutoContent Wizard, Templates, Blank Presentations, or Open an existing presentation. We will start with the AutoContent Wizard.
AutoContent Wizard: The AutoContent wizard is the best place to start in PowerPoint if you are a new user, or if you want to create a presentation quickly.
The start screen of the AutoContent wizard comes up as soon as you choose this option. Read this screen and then click Next.
The second screen allows you to define the presentation type. You can scroll through the list to view available types. Choose a type of presentation, or if there is not one that interests you, choose Generic. After you have selected a presentation type, click Next.
The third screen allows you to choose a format for presentations, informal meets, and handouts or Internet or kiosk presentations. The difference is in the use of the presentation. You are in charge of the first kind; the user runs the kiosk or Internet presentation. Choose the first option and click Next.
The fourth screen allows you to choose the way you will publish your presentation. Choose onscreen, yes (for handouts), and click Next. (This screen will not come up if you choose Internet or kiosk).
The fifth and final screen of this wizard allows you to enter information. In this screen type what you want on your title slide. At the very least you should type a title, your name, and the date. When you have entered all of your information, click Next.
The screen now statesó"Those are all the answers the Wizard needs to create your presentation! Choose Finish to view the document." You are ready to click Finish and view your creation.
Your presentation should come up in Outline view. There are two ways to choose different views. One is to use the View menu. The other is to use the view buttons at the lower left corner of your screen. Your choicesófrom left to right óinclude slide view, outline view, slide sorter view, notes page view, and slide show view. Try each of these buttons and watch what happens.
Editing your presentation: Outline view makes editing slide content very easy. Simply type your words into the presentation outline and delete the sample text created by AutoContent Wizard. The modified text automatically appears on the appropriate slide. You often use the Outline View when you have a lot of text to edit. Some people design presentations in Outline view.
Slide view lets you see what the final product will look like as you are editing. To edit a text object, just click the text string you want to edit and start typing. You can use your editing skills from Word here.
Checking the spelling your presentation: Again two ways! Choose Tools and pull down to Spelling. OR Click the Spelling button on the standard toolbar.
Save your presentation on your disk as My First PP Presentation.
Opening an existing presentation: Open PowerPoint and choose open an existing presentation. Click on OK.
Navigate to your floppy disk (A drive). Highlight your presentation and click on open. Remember that you will only see Presentations if that is what it says in the Files of Type window.
Choose exit from the File menu or click in the close box (upper right hand corner) to close PowerPoint.
Starting a New Presentation: Open PowerPoint. Choose Blank Presentation. Click on OK.
The next screen you see is the New Slide dialog box. You should also see this same dialog box every time you add a slide. The box asks you to choose an AutoLayout. Youíll notice that it goes automatically to the Title Slide when you start a new presentation. Click OK.
Click in the top text box and type your title. Click in the bottom and type your name. If you make a mistake, edit much as you would in Word. You just have to remember to click in the text box for it to be active (you will see a line around it then).
Choose the File menu and click on Save. Save this presentation on your disk. Name it whatever you want. From now on save about every ten minutes or whenever you make a major change to your presentation. This will mean that you will not lose great amounts of work when something goes wrong.
Add a slide one of the following ways: Choose the Insert menu and click on New Slide. OR Press the Ctrl+M key combination. OR Click the New Slide button on the standard toolbar. OR Click the New Slide button on the Common Tasks toolbar.
Try different types of new slides to find out what you can and cannot do within that layout. For instance, you cannot put anything other than clip art in the boxes that are created for clip art.
To add clip art: Choose the Insert menu and pull down to Picture and over to Clip Art. When you are looking at the Microsoft Clipart Gallery, you have the option of choosing clip art, pictures, sounds, or videos. The sounds and movies will paste to your presentation; however, they use a LOT of memory. And are not saved on your presentation so must be present on the viewing computer in order to run.
To make use of background designs: You may go to the Format menu and choose Apply Design or make use of the Apply Design button.
When you are applying the designs, you have an opportunity to view the various designs that are available in that particular version of PowerPoint.
You may also make use of the drawing tools to create your own background design.
Adding animations: Animations are means by which your word and illustrations enter the slide. When you are using PowerPoint for a presentation, this is important due to the fact that only the words you are speaking about will appear.
When you are in the slide view, you can click on each element (title, text box, or illustration) and choose Preset Animation from the Slide Show menu.
You may also create Custom Animations from this same menu.
When you are in the Slide View you also have an animation button that you may use.
Creating transitions: Transitions are the effects through which PowerPoint changes slides. The default setting is no transition.
When you are in the Slide Sorter View you will see a button and a menu for creating transitions.
Creating a timed presentation: You may set timings that make your presentation automatically shown through the Rehearse Timings selection in the Slide Show menu or the Rehearse Timings button.

Our goal with PowerPoint is to make a presentation stack. The required criteria are in the syllabus. Have fun and ask questions!
