Language Institute

Western New Mexico University is expanding its current English as a Second Language (ESL) program with the creation of the Language Institute. The new program is designed to provide educational opportunities and language services to help strengthen the English language usage of people in southwest New Mexico.

Program participants will be strengthened in their grammar, reading, writing, speaking and listening abilities.

“Acknowledging that there is always a need to help our communities, we feel one way this can be done is strengthening our workforce at the level each person desires to be at in understanding the English language,” said Manny Rodriguez, Acting Director of the Language Institute.

Tuition and books for the program are provided at no cost to the participant.

Prospective participants are administered an entrance assessment to determine the individual’s level of understanding. The participant is then placed one of the 12 levels of instruction.

The 6-week summer sessions are scheduled to begin May 21 through June 29 at 15-hour week sessions. The fall session begins August 20 and ends December 10 at 6-hour work week sessions.

To enroll in the course, contact the Language Institute at 575.538.6158 or languageinstitute@wnmu.edu.
