This annual report to Congress focuses on 60 indicators, representing a consensus of professional judgment on the most significant national measures of the condition & progress of education at the time, but tempered by the availability of information. "Stopouts or Stayouts? Undergraduates Who Leave College in Their First Year." Tracks the path of those who return (stopouts) to determine where & when they enrolled. Also compares the background & school experience of stopouts with those who did not return (stayouts). Among the findings: nearly 30% of students beginning in 1989-90 left postsecondary education in their first year.

"Student Financing of Undergraduate Education: 1995-96, With an Essay on Student Loans." Describes the role of student loans within the context of tuition, the total price of attendance, & other financial aid available to undergraduates in 1995-96. Includes information on the cumulative amounts of federal loans borrowed by students throughout their undergraduate education. Provides profiles of student borrowing & financial aid for each of the 4 major types of institutions. Includes tables describing more detailed information on student loans, tuition & the price of attendance, financial aid, net price of education & need, & general background characteristics of undergraduates.

Science

"Long-Term Trends in Student Science Performance." Shows mixed results since the first assessment using data from the NAEP 1996 Long-Term Trend Science Assessment. Among the findings: scores for all 3 age groups fell & then rose. Both 9- & 13-year-olds showed an overall increase, but 17- year-olds showed an overall decline.

Writing

"Long-Term Trends in Student Writing Performance." Shows a decline in scores for grade 11 students over the period 1984- 1996 using data from the NAEP Long-Term Trend in Writing Assessment. Found that scores for students in grades 4 & 8 remained unchanged & that white students continued to have higher scores than both black & Hispanic students in all 3 grades.
