1. The meeting was convened 16 Feb 1995 in Phoenix, AZ, withShannon Ammiote conducting. Roy Howard Acted as recorder and gavea historical overview of the SIG. Attendance was 66 individuals.
2. Review of last year's goals.
a. Five or six presentations were accepted in Native Americaninterest areas, plus an all day Native American Institute.
b. Program Committee. Several were nominated as readers from ourSIG. Most were not accepted. We need to address this issue.
c. Applications for presentations.
d. Visibility: Pow Wow and program cover.
e. School showcases. The highest population was 24%. There wasone

Resolution suggested last year submitted this year: Whereasthe United States Bureau of the Census curently recognizes over500 Native American Tribes; be it resolved that NABE will recognizeand refer to Native American issues, specifically as "NativeAmerican" - not lumped into categories such as "other"Rationale: In order to be responsive to Native American Indianissues, NABE must first recognize the Native American people asa specific populations of individuals with unique characteristicsand needs.
g. Other items: none were mentioned by the group.
3. New Business.
a. Native languages should not be called "foreign languages",was the theme of a resolution. Janice Shroeder was able to advocatesuccessfully for a change in the resolution deadline until 5pmtoday, rather than the noon deadline.
b. Washington DC, Arizona and many other districts are receivingmany indigenous immigrants from Latin America. They are beingplaced in Spanish bilingual programs, even if they do not knowthat language. What can NABE do to help districts be aware ofindigenous people of other nations?
c. Readers of proposals should be nominated from our SIG. Thecall for papers is on page 191. If you feel you are suited tojudge papers in those categories, you may volunteer. Attach yourqualifications on a letter to Jim Lyons and send it right away.Do follow up calls and letters until you know your status. JaniceShroeder will continue on the Board and will assist. Proposalsare due June 1st. There is not much time. We will suggest thatthe Native American interest proposals are routed through theInstitute committee or the SIG. If you volunteer, the SIG willadvocate for you. Volunteers include: Doris McGrady, Maryann Goodluck,Annie Holwood, Darlene Yazzie, Marc Bluestone, Deborah Izo, SharonJones, Jane Lockard, Shannon Amiotte, Tammy Bauck-Getz. If youwant your proposal to be sponsored by the SIG, please route acopy of your proposal to Marc Bluestone before sending to NABE.We will attach an endorsement letter.
d. The Native American Institute should run more than one day.There is a great deal of interest, and it is sure that peoplewould attend if there were more accessible sessions. Katy Stevensand the others deserve recognition for this year's Institute.Someone should volunteer to propose the session. The program todaydid have a conflict, but it was resolved by having it cancelled.Janice Shroeder, NABE officer, said that the NABE board is concernedwith the conflicts and is interested in resolving them. They cannotavoid all conflicts.
e. The SIG should work towards representation on the NABE boardand in the presentations. We are responsible to individually keepthe focus of NABE on the issues of our special interest.
f. We need volunteers to submit articles in the name of the SIGto the NABE News.
g. Jerry Brown is on the organizing committee for the World IndigenousPeople's Conference in Albuquerque in 1996. Our SIG is invitedto participate. The last one was in 1993 in Australia with 5,000in attendance. We should support indigenous languages whereverthey are in the world.
h. NABE will provide the SIG with mailing labels for 2 mailingsper year. We may also use 1-800-548 -2669 for E-mail for NativeAmerican interest. You may dial this number to register your I.D.and get on the electronic mail network. Educational Native AmericanNetwork (ENAN).
