Annual Business Meeting 2003

January 30, 2003, New Orleans SIG Business Meeting 11 am

1. Conducted by Council member Roy Howard

2. Introductions of the 37 people in attendance

3. Elections

a. Robert Yazzie nominated Phillip Tree, Jr. who did not accept
Kris nominated Bobby Robbins who did not accept
Berdina nominated Bryan Charging Cloud
Manuel nominated Rosalita Roach
Robert motioned to close the nominations, Kris seconded. Co-chairs elected unaninously.

The following were nominated to the IBE SIG Council: Bernardo Vallejo, Berlinda Jones, Berdina Tsosie, Phillip Tree, Jr., Bobby Robbins, Faye Fernando, Barbara Medina, Marcia Brenden, Kris Kibbee, Roy Howard, Rosalita Roach, Bryan Charging Cloud.
Charlotte moved to close nominations. Erin seconded. The Council was elected by unanimous vote.

The co-chairs gave thank you comments and pledged to do everything they can.


January 30, 2003, New Orleans

4 pm Council Meeting Conducted by Bryan Charging Cloud and Rosalita Roach. 20 in attendance.

1. Welcome

2. Prayer

3. Comments of each in attendance included concerns such as:

a. website & communications

b. the need to send presentation proposals to NABE

c. the need to organize a Pow Wow for NABE 2004

d. NABE should allow a vendor rate different from commercial exhibitor rate to allow native artesans to sell

e. we need a better way to insure continuity for IBE issues at NABE conferences

f. The NABE conference should feature native history and culture of the local region

g. topics that integrate culture and academics

h. resolutions can make a statement or a request for action

4. Schedule of meetings needed. SIG business meeting followe dby a council meeting with the new officers and an institute

5. Resolution.

6. We will stay in communication throughout the coming year about the following goals for NABE 2004. Go to http://www.nicenet.com. Give yourself a user name. You can join the on-line discussion groups for the following topics by logging in and choosing "Join" under "Classes" from the navigation on the left side of your screen. a. Native Student entertainment each day: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday.

b. Preconference Symposium: Tuesday, Wednesday Feb. 3, 4. Select a theme and title. Recruit and commit presenters, plan activities including talking circles; invite all of Indian Country; notify NABE of meeting room needs.

c. Pow Wow. Thursday February 5. Structured to be inviting and informative for all NABE members.

d. IBE Conference Institute. Friday, February 6 all day.

e. Native American Language Festival. Saturday, February 7. For Elementary and Secondary students and families.


31 January 2003 Resolutions meeting of the Council

8 am to 12 pm. Council met on the wording of the Resolutions.

12 pm to 2:30 pm. Council met with NABE Board and Past Presidents and gave moving testimonials.

2:30 - 5pm Council attended NABE Resolutions Committee Meeting. Two resolutions accepted by the committee.
