Richard Solomon Chávez
Richard Solomon Chávez was born and raised in Gallup, New Mexico
Richard, called Dickie by his friends, has shared his faith in God by teaching catechism to grade school through high school aged students. As a Christian and a compassionate man, he has helped others financially, physically, and even by opening his home to those in need on many occasions, sharing with others the blessings he has received. For 24 years he has shared of his time, talent, and energy as a cook, lector, retreat master (rector), musician, and president of the Catholic Cursillo Movement for the Diocese of Gallup. He leads the Spanish Choir with his accordion music at Sacred Heart Cathedral Church.
Dickie has owned businesses in Gallup since May, 1967. At the age of 24, he and his brother Ralph, purchased El Rancho Shell Station. He also bought the Indian Hills Shell Station. Then they built the Roadrunner Auto Clinic. There he had the opportunity to help many motorists experiencing hardships as they traveled Route 66. He and his wife, Rosemary, have owned Glenns Bakery since 1980.
Spanish language music is a vital part of his life. He wants to keep it alive and well for the community and future generations. He plays often at church, anniversaries, weddings, dances, concerts, mañanitas, schools, and other special occasions throughout the region. He also hosts a weekly radio program, The Squeeze is On, featuring Conjunto music.
He values his marriage and family life. A good husband and father, he is a hard worker with a serious sense of responsibility and has provided well for his wife and six children. A self educated man in the school of hard knocks, he appreciates books, learning, and creative thinking. He has a good sense of humor and makes people laugh.
His leadership and service and music has improved the quality of life in Gallup, New Mexico.
