Interactive chat with students from indigenous groups

Students will participate in an online chat with other students that represent various indigenous groups from around the United States/Canada.   The hope is that students will learn about the similarities and differences between indigenous groups.  They will also explore the problems facing each group in terms of maintaining their culture, language, and ethnic identity.

After the online discussion is completed.  Students will create a poster or brochure to take back to their communities to teach their communities about the cultures they have recently encountered.  They can exchange e-mail addresses so they can follow up if necessary.

Cookout of Cultures and Costume Extravaganza

The objective:  To use technology (internet, online encyclopedia etc.) and find a cultural recipe or traditional costume of the studentÕs choice.  The student will then be given the task of making the dish or costume.  During the Cookout and Costume day, the student will explain to the class the reason they choose such item and explain how and what tradition it is part of.  The more information the student gives, the better the grade!

Each student will bring in a traditional dish of his or her choice.  The student will be expected to tell the class where they found the recipe, the culture, and the reason they chose such dish. Some sample recipe sites
