Dear _________________________________________________,

The Gallup Intercultural Film Festival (GIFF) is a showcase of culturally diverse motion pictures. Our purpose is to spawn and promote the creativity of individuals working in the artistic media of film, video and other moving pictures.

We are in our first year after a 9-year hiatus, and have a single venue: the historic El Morro Theatre in downtown Gallup, New Mexico. This year’s Festival runs from September 29th through October 2nd 2005. Key producers and high profile actors will share their talents at workshops, panel discussions, and screenings. You are hereby invited to be one of these (producers/actors/etc.) , and to show your recent film ______________________________________________ at the GIFF.

Gallup is a beautiful and strategic location for production of Southwestern and Native American filmmaking. The region is between Flagstaff and Albuquerque on old Historic Route 66, and surrounded by Dine'(Navajo), Hopi, Zuni, Laguna, Acoma indigenous peoples. Gallup is only 30 minutes from Navajo Nation Headquarters (Window Rock, Arizona). The area is ripe for cultivating culturally-sensitive film production and ready for creative economic growth.

Please contact our Hospitality Coordinator, Ms. Lindsey Mapes, to let us know if you can join us for a day or two from September 29th through October 2nd 2005. She can help with your flight, train, bus, or car arrangements. We would love to have you join us in our inaugural year of the GIFF, and hope to hear from you by June 15th !

Creating a Revolution in Filmmaking,

Native American TV to Fight Stereotypes
Tolerance.org
April 12, 2005

Carrie Kilman writes that Native Americans are rarely portrayed in movies and on television, according to several studies documenting minority representation in the media. When they are featured, the images usually are inaccurate. To counter this, a coalition of Native American activists is creating a slate of television shows and planning to produce its own TV channel. The group's goal goes beyond providing television shows and news programs that feature Native American actors and issues. It also aims to provide Native American young people with job training programs for employment in the entertainment industry.

Indigenous website www.firstnationsfirstfeatures.org
A wonderful new site alerts you to indigenous films, actors, and directors worldwide as well as in the U.S. and Canada. We may not get to the film festivals in New York and D.C. but we may be able to find the films when they are released on video or DVD.
